Academic preconditions:
Bachelor degree in biology. A good understanding of general and ecological physiology. (For SDU students: Passed General Physiology A (BB 16) and Ecological Physiology (BB 20)).
Course introductionTo gain insight into principles and mechanisms of extra- and intracellular acid-base regulation in vertebrates and invertebrates.
Expected learning outcomeSubject overviewPhysico-chemical principles in acid-base chemistry. Dependent and independent variables in acid-base systems. Experimental techniques and interpretation of data. Buffering in extra- and intra-cellular compartments. Transmembrane and transepithelial mechanisms for transfer of acid-base equivalents. Interactions between acid-base regulation, respiration and ionic/osmo-regulation. Endogenous acid-base disturbances. Acid-base regulation in water and air breathers and during transition from water to air breathing. Influence of environmental changes on acid-base balance in animals, with examples concerning hypoxia, hypercapnia, acidification, temperature, salinity, presence of toxic substances etc.
