Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
BMB 511 Bioinformatics I, DM502 Programming A & DM503 Programming B must be passed.
Course introductionThis course will introduce some new topics as well as follow up on some of the topics introduced in Bioinformatics I in greater detail. There will be an emphasis on the practical aspects of Bioinformatics that have relevance in the Biotech/Drug Discovery industry and which address new and current technologies to help prepare students for a career in this field.
QualificationsKnowledge about current industrial technologies and trends as they relate to the bioinformatics area.
Knowledge regarding the mathematical basis for the bioinformatics tools that are commonly used by researchers (e.g. alignment algorithms), as well as practical experience using some of these tools or using similar techniques.
Knowledge and hands-on experience so that the student will be better prepared to enter the workforce as a bioinformatician.
Expected learning outcomeSubject overviewMathematical and statistical analysis (Hidden Markov Models, Neural Networks, Sequence Alignment and Pattern Matching in DNA and proteins, associated algorithms), database systems in biology (design, data integration, data mining), modeling (metabolomics, cellular process dynamics, protein/chemical structure modeling), predictive methods (phylogenetic analysis, protein structure), and genomics analysis (cDNA arrays/RNA profiling, normalization, cluster analysis, pathway analysis, SNPs).
