Prerequisites:
Bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, physics, bio chemistry and molecular biology, biomedicine, medicine or nanobioscience.

Academic preconditions:
It is strongly suggested that students have followed and passed the course BMB509.

Course introduction
Bioimaging plays an important role in modern biosciences not only as a tool for research but also as a means to improve medical treatments.

The main objective of this course is to provide the theoretical basis of these techniques together with some “hands on” laboratory practice. It is the goal of the course to teach the students general principles of fluorescence and light microscopy as well as teach principles behind advanced fluorescence and imaging techniques as well as a short introduction to image processing. There will be practical demonstrations and hands on exercises on all topics.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give the competence to Identify the “method of choice” for analysis of a given biological sample
  • Give skills to perform image analysis using advanced microscopy instrumentation
  • Give knowledge and understanding of the strengths and limitations of modern techniques in microscopy

Expected learning outcome
The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:
  • Understand the basics of microscopy and optical bioimaging.
  • Discuss strengths and limitations of modern techniques in microscopy.
  • Identify the “method of choice” for analysis of a given biological sample
  • Perform image analysis using advanced microscopy instrumentation
  • Evaluate scientific results in the original research literature

Subject overview
The following main topics are contained in the course:
  • Wide field microscopy
  • Laser scanning single-photon confocal microscopy
  • Two-photon microscopy
  • Spinning disk confocal microscopy
  • Fluorescence Correlation Spectroscopy
  • Raster Image Correlation Spectroscopy
  • Atomic Force microscopy
  • Fluorescent Lifetime Imaging microscopy
  • Introduction to image analyses using FIJI and Huygens

Literature
There isn't any litterature for the course at the moment.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 24 hours
Skills training phase: 24 hours, hereof:
 - Tutorials: 4 hours
 - Laboratory exercises: 20 hours

Educational activities
  • Literature studies
  • Preparation of projects individually and in groups.

Educational form
The intro phase consists of lectures which provide an introduction to the course. Students are expected to independently read prescribed texts to achieve the expected competencies and necessary overview.

The skills training phase deals with the central parts of the course using computer based exercises and hands on microscopy laboratory training. The lab exercises in which students work together in small groups of 2-3 people give a practical implantation of the theory presented in the intro phase .

The study phase is partly preparation for the intro lectures, tutorials and laboratory exercises as well as preparation of laboratory reports and exam preparation (repetition).

Language
This course is taught in Danish or English, depending on the lecturer. However, if international students participate, the teaching language will always be English.

Remarks
The course has limited entry. The following 4 criterias are taken into consideration when seats are assigned.
  1. Students with the most ECTS from their master
  2. Students who are accepted conditionally on the master
  3. Students who follows master courses concurrent with their bachelor programme
  4. Bachelor students
If the score is even lots are drawn.

The academic envirometns at The faculty of science manages the prioritisation and at waiting list is established and will then be made aware from the faculty. The waiting list will not be transferred to the following year.

In order to keep the assigned seat you need to attend the first course day or notify the teacher, otherwise the seat is given to the next student from the waiting list.
