Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
Electromagnetism (FY02B) must be passed.
Course introductionIntroduction to generel methods of experimental physics, including data acquisition and analysis.
Expected learning outcomeSubject overviewIn the lectures an introduction is given to electronics, optics and solid state physics. Emphasis will be on subjects dealt with in the lab.
Laboratory exercises focus on general methods in spectroscopy and optics as well as electronic equiptment commonly applied to experiments to record, amplify and analyse signals. We will deal with photo detectors, electronic amplifiers/filters and some semiconductor devices. Then these devices will be used to record diffraction patterns of light and to study refraction phenomena. Finally, a grating spectrometer and a Fabry-Perot interferometer will be used to investigate optical spectra.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
Approval of reports. A report about the theoretical part of the exercises must be handed in and approved before the experimental exercises can begin. Both reports are evaluated internally by teacher. Passed/not passed.
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Forelæsninger (20 timer) og laboratorieøvelser (40 timer).

Language
This course is taught in English.
Remarks
Some of the experiments can be extended as Bachelorprojects.
The course is taught for the last time in the spring semester of 2007 and will be replaced by FY506 Electromagnetism II, FY508 Physics of condensed matter and FY509 Thermal physics.
