Course introduction
The purpose of the course is to give the student a broad understanding of the fundamental principles governing nature, both on a macroscopic and on a microscopic (particle) scale.

Expected learning outcome
After completing the course, the student will be able to

 Identify the physical principles which lie behind a specific application or problem
 Use the mathematical tools needed to solve the problem
 Assess the physical validity of the problem solution Perform simple measurements and interpret the results.

Subject overview
1) Fundamental mechanics: Newton’s laws, conservation of momentum, angular momentum and energy.
2) Application of these fundamental laws at the macroscopic level: Elasticity, Hooke’s law, harmonic motion. Macroscopic forces. Different phases.
3) Application of the same principles at the microscopic level: Particle dynamics. Microscopic forces, fundamental forces of nature.
4) Waves: Wavelength, frequency, energy in waves, light as a wave phenomenon.
5) The diffraction limit for observation of small objects.
6) Elementary quantum physics: The q concept of quantum states, the photoelectric effect, the Compton effect.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
(a) Written examination (4 hours) with external censurship. Marks: according to the 7-point marking scale.
(b) Obligatory handing in of written reports.
(c) Approval of reports from laboratory exercises.
Re-examination after 4th Quarter.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

Forelæsninger (28 timer). Eksaminatorier: (12 timer).
