Prerequisites:
This course can only be taken if it:
  1. is a constituent part of your programme
  2. is a specified recommendation for elective ECTS in your programme
  3. is part of a specified transitional arrangement ('overgangsordning') for a course you have not yet passed

Academic preconditions:
None.

Course introduction
The aim of the course is to introduce classical mechanics, wave mechanics and thermodynamics. These elements are essential building blocks for any education in physics. The students will learn how to employ physical laws, create mathematical models, solve these models and to evaluate their results and consequences. They will also perform experiments that illustrate the theory and learn how to handle and interpret the results. The course therefore introduces both the basic physical concepts that form the foundation for the physics education as well as the scientific method.

The course is the first course in the physics education and there the students are no required to have take any other university course.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

Expected learning outcome
The learning objectives of the course are that the student demonstrates the ability to: Subject overview
The following main topics are contained in the course: Literature

This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
  1. Participation in laboratory exercises is a prerequisite for exam b). Pass/fail, internal marking by teacher.
  2. Participation in laboratory exercises is a prerequisite for exam c). Pass/fail, internal marking by teacher.
Assessment and marking:
  1. Mandatory assignments. Internal marking by teacher, pass/fail. (1 ECTS).
  2. Reports on lab exercises. Internal marking by teacher, pass/fail. (1 ECTS).

  4. Project report. Internal marking, Danish 7-mark scale. (3 ECTS).
  5. Written exam. Internal marking, Danish 7-mark scale. (4 ECTS). A closer description of the exam rules will be posted under 'Course Information' on Blackboard.
Date of exam
The ordinary exam takes place on January 16, 2017
The re-examination takes place on March 20, 2017

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 40 hours
Skills training phase: 60 hours, hereof:
 - Tutorials: 40 hours
 - Laboratory exercises: 20 hours

Educational activities Study phase: 15 hours
Educational form
In the study phase it is expected that the students work independently with the material including examples and problems in the book and to study the study phase notes that will be distributed. It is also expected that the students will study the take-home problems, lab notes and lab journals that are all important elements of the study phase. The students can expect to receive feedback from an instructor. Finally it is expected that the students will spend part of the time to catch up and refresh their minds on the problems they have solved in the skills training phase and to review the curriculum just before the exam.

Language
This course is taught in Danish or English, depending on the lecturer.
