None

Academic preconditions:
The science year (first year) must be completed when commencing this course.

Course introduction
This course will treat the core topics of nanobioscience including principles for design and characterization of specific systems within nanobioscience. The aim is a thorough understanding of important concepts and principles that govern the structure and function of nanostructures in biological and artificial systems. The students will learn to locate, read and understand relevant scientific papers in the field and to use the knowledge from these papers in their own projects. They will gain an understanding of the technological potentials in the fabrication of nanobio-structures with improved functionality. Finally, the students will come into contact with important experimental techniques used to characterize nanobio-systems with selected techniques introduced as hands-on experiments. The latter part of the course includes a basic introduction to computerized data acquisition, instrument control and data analysis.

Expected learning outcome

Subject overview
The course is divided in two parts:
[A] The first part describes the structure and function of the main types of nanomaterials in biological systems. Examples of synthetic nano-bio materials and self-assembly of nanobiostructures with new functionality will be presented. Topics included are: Principles of molecular self assembly. The use of natural (lipids, DNA, peptides) or artificial building blocks for the design and assembly of nanostructures. Discussion and ´student lectures on selected scientific topics including retrieval and reading of scientific papers.
[B] Characterization, applications and devices. The more practical part deals with practical exercises on important experimental techniques used in the field of nanobioscience. Instrument control, data acquisition, data analysis. Introduction to cleanroom technology.

Literature
There isn't any litterature for the course at the moment.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
The course is evaluated with a 4 hour written examination where notes and books are allowed. A number of problems are posed that are derived from topics in recent research papers in the field of nanobioscience. Marks according to the Danish 13-point marking scale. External examiner.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

Forelæsninger og studenterfremlæggelser (60 timer). Opgaveløsning, artikelsøgning og mindre eksperimentelle øvelser (30 timer). Skemalagt med 2x3 timer pr uge.
