Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
The student must be familiar with the content of the course MM518 – Numerical analysis A or equivalent.

Course introduction
The student should be aquainted with differential equations as models of realistic problems from science, engineering and finance and should learn to analyze and solve these problems numerically.

Qualifications
After the course the student should be able to

• model problems from other disciplines as differential or integral equations.
• solve these problems numerically in 2 steps: first perform a discretization of the problem to a finite problem and then program the solution of the finite problem.
• analyze and evaluate the solution in relation to the original problem, in particular address the sources of error: model error, discrimination error, method error, and round-off error.

Expected learning outcome
After the course the student should be able to:

• formulate and solve differential equations as models for realistic problems
• plan and carry out the numerical solution of the equation, taking stability and accuracy of possible methods into account
• analyse the sources of error and estimate their influence on the result

Subject overview
Solution of ordinary and partial differential equations, discretization by the difference method, solution of the discrete problem, stability and accuracy, error analysis.

Literature
