Course introduction
The aim of the course is to introduce the student to the basic concepts and methods of abstract algebra, with emphasis on rings, fields and elementary number theory. The material covered is important in some more advanced courses in algebra, group theory and analysis.

The courses MM536 (or similar) and MM537 should at least be taken simultaneously, or the material from MM537 be known. This course provides the students with the necessary prerequisites for courses MM539 and MM543, that appear later in the degree.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:

  • Give skills to apply thinking and terminology from the subject’s basic disciplines.
  • Give skills to present mathematical thinking both in written and oral form.
  • Give skills to work with abstract algebraic concepts, including numbers, polynomials, rings and fields.
  • Give knowledge and understanding of rings, fields and elementary number theory.

Expected learning outcome
The learning objectives of the course are that the student demonstrates the ability to:
  • Reproduce definitions and results covered in the course.
  • Be able to use these results to analyse concrete examples.
  • Formulate and present definitions and calculations in a mathematically rigorous way.
  • Reproduce proofs of certain simpler results from the course.
Subject overview
The following main topics are contained in the course:
  • elementary number theory
  • polynomials
  • rings and fields
  • homomorphisms and quotients
