Course introductionTo introduce the students to fundamental questions from current national and international research in mathematics and science education. The students will gain insight and knowledge which enables analysis of teaching and learning of the subjects of natural sciences (mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology). The students will develop competences, which enables them to investigate and discuss fundamental questions in mathematics and science education, like: What is mathematics and science? What is the role of mathematics and science in society? Why do we have to learn mathematics and science? What does it mean to learn mathematics and science? Is it difficult to learn mathematics and science? Which forms of teaching promote learning?
Expected learning outcomeSubject overviewMathematics and science education as scientific disciplines. Relations between the school subject and the scientific subject. Aims of mathematics and science in education. General education in mathematics and science. Relations between the subjects of natural sciences. Relations between mathematics, science and technology. Relations between the subjects of natural sciences and other school subjects. Theories of teaching and learning. Forms of evaluation and their impact on teaching and learning. Teachers and students’ attitudes to, interests in and conceptions of subjects, teaching and learning.

Assessment and marking:
Written report and seminars with oral presentations. Internal examiner, pass/fail.
