SPDM801: Master\'s thesis in Computer Science (60 ECTS)

A supervisor contract and project statement must be handed in.

Submission is conducted electronically via https://blanket.sam.sdu.dk/form/97/submit. Submission must take place no later than 1 week after the semester has started, but is recommended, that it is handed in as soon as possible. The contract must be approved by supervisor, teaching committee and the head of studies.

Be aware that it is not possible to fill in the form after deadline of submission, since the application system will shut down. The system will reopen in connection with the next course registration, then you can fill out the form for the next semester.

Course introduction
The thesis constitutes the conclusion of the Master's program in computer science. In the thesis, the student should demonstrate deep knowledge of one or more concrete areas within computer science.

Qualifications
At the conclusion of the thesis, the student should be able to:

  • Make a scientific overview of the knowledge from an area of computer science.
  • Put into perspective problems arising in a selected topic, with the help of computer science  methodology, reasoning and technical terms. 
  • Independently acquire and further develop computer science knowledge within a selected area.
  • Create new variations of the learnt methods, as needed for specific problems.
  • Appropriately structure and manage execution of the project and generate outcomes commensurate with the available time.
Expected learning outcome
At the conclusion of the thesis, the student should be able to:
  • Formulate problems at the current research level in computer science. 
  • Plan, analyze and apply methods from computer science to solving the stated problems.
  • Present the obtained knowledge and insight in a precise and intelligible language – in both oral and written form.
Subject overview
The project usually takes its point of departure from a scientific paper or a few such papers published within an area of computer sicence.

Assessment and marking:
  1. Report and oral defense. External censorship, Danish 7-mark scale. (60 ECTS). (15017712).

Deadline for master's theses begun in the autumn semester is 1 June. Deadline for master's theses begun in the spring semester is 1 January.

The thesis may be carried out by not more than 2 students in cooperation. The examination starts with a presentation. After the presentation the students are examined individually in both the report and the presentation. The student's presentation is part of the total assessment.

The deadline for the thesis report is final. This means that one exam attempt has been used if the thesis report has not been handed in on time. In the event of a missed submission deadline, the university sets a modified research problem within the same subject area as the thesis. The modified research problem must correspond a work load of three months, and it must be received by the Head of Studies no later than 14 days after the submission deadline.

Educational activities

Language
This course is taught in Danish or English, depending on the lecturer. However, if international students participate, the teaching language will always be English.

Remarks
The master thesis must contain an abstract of the contents of the report, cf. "Eksamensbekendtgørelsen" (statutory order of examinations) section 24, subsection 2. If the report is written in Danish, the abstract must be in English. If the report is written in English, the abstract must be in Danish.
