Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
The content of Statistical Modelling (ST502) or Applied Statistics must be known.
Course introductionTo acquaint the students with efficient statistical methods that may serve as basis for the planning of experiments and research activities. The methods aim at providing precise and reliable data and moreover to reduce the experimental work as much as possible. Methods for reduction of the influence from noise factors on experimental results are presented.
Expected learning outcomeAfter having followed the course the student should be able to
• understand sources of variation and their impact on the collected data,
• plan experiments with focus on the estimation of the sources of variation,
• construct appropriate statistical models and to perform statistical inference on data with different sources of variation,
• reproduce key theoretical results concerning elementary operations on random variables and to apply these to simple theoretical assignments,
• work with the concepts and models of the course, both in scalar and matrix/vector representation,
• perform a practical data analysis using the methodology of the course,
• perform programming relevant to the content of the course in the statistical package used in the course,
• identify and interpret relevant information in the output of the statistical package used in the course,
• summarize the results of an analysis in a statistical report.
Subject overviewMain principles in experimental design:
Randomization and blocking.
Balanced designs, square-designs, one or more blocking variables.
Balanced incomplete block designs.
Factorial designs, blocking in factorial designs, fractional factorial designs and confounding.
