Ubegrænset deltagerantal. Kurset kører i 2. kvartal.

Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
The content of ST503 Statistics for Biologists is assumed to be known. Anatomy as contained in BB522 Chordate zoology or SU504 Basic Biological Anthropology is recommended to be known.

Course introduction
The students will obtain a profound knowledge about methods for the analysis of morphological variation, with the human skeleton as an example. Included is practical work with data acquisition, classical and modern analysis methods, and critique and control of methods.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:
  • employ the relevant terminology
  • design and perform data collection and analysis in connection with a concrete morphometric project
  • perform control and critique of methods
  • perform prediction of measures of body size
  • interpret results from morphometric studies in an evolutionary biological context
  • read and analyse the relevant scientific literature and evaluate its quality
Subject overview
  • Skeletal variation
  • Classic osteometric methods and measurement systems
  • Geometric morphometrics
  • Statistical analysis of morphometric data
  • Discrete anatomical traits
  • Prediction of body size (length, weight)
  • Intra- and inter-observer error
  • Methods for comparison of different methods (Bland-Altman)
  • Quantitative genetics of anatomical traits
Literature
