Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
The course is mainly intended for students preparing a thesis which involves experiments with animals. Students who have passed BX20 cannot participate in this course.

Course introduction
The course deals with legal, ethical and technical questions related to using live animals for biological research and the combating of diseases.

Expected learning outcome
To give the participants a basic knowledge of the use of animals in experimental medical and biomedical research. The course is basic in order to be able to set up, carry out and evaluate animal experiments. The course is a prerequisite for being able to seek permission from “Dyreforsøgstilsynet” (Danish council supervising animal experiments) according to Regulation on qualification requirements to individuals dealing with test animals (BEK no 1016 of 12/12/2001).

Subject overview
The course will consist of lectures on the following topics:
1. The use of animals for medical and biological research.
2. Laws and regulations on animal experiments.
3. Health risks when working with test animals.
4. Handling and non-surgical operations.
5. The biology of test animals.
6. Genetics and genetic monitoring of test animals.
7. Health status and health monitoring.
8. Feed and external environment.
9. Section technique and sampling.
10. Test design and statistic evaluation of results.
11. Pain prevention and pain management.
12. Anaesthesia of test animals.
13. Experimental surgery.
14. Good laboratory practice.
15. Animal testing, animal welfare, ethics.

Furthermore the course consists of laboratory exercises on the following topics:
1. Handling of test animals, non-surgical procedures.
2. Killing and autopsy of test animals.
3. Anaesthesia of rabbits and rats.
4. Surgical operations on rats.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Written examination (two hours) with aids (the course book, lecture notes and the statutory text). Internal examiner. Passed/not passed.

Re-examination after second quarter.
