Course introduction
The course aims at giving a general introduction to biological systems at the molecular, cellular, and organismal level, including plants, fungi, and animals. It focuses on general terms and regulatory mechanisms in the fields of cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, botany, and zoology, with a focus on the coupling of sructure – including histology, anatomy, and morphology – and function. Particular attention is given to organisms relevant to pharmaceutical science, i.e., sources of pharmaceuticals, parasites, pathogens, and animal models.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

describe the fundamental structure of living organisms from the biomoleclar to the organismal level,
describe the variation in structure and the coupling of structure and function in plants, fungi, and animals,
describe the phylogenetic tree of life and the phylogenetics of plants, fungi, and chordates,
identify selected plants and fungi,
identify tissue types and anatomic and morfological structures in plants, fungi, and animals,
describe important types of plant and fungal substances,
describe reproduction, life cycles, and embryology for selected plants, fungi, and animals including zoonoses.

Subject overview
The following subjects will be discussed: 


1. Cell structure;
2. The structure and function of biological macromolecules;
3. Metabolism;
4. Biomembranes;
5. The cell cycle, meiosis and mitosis;
6. The flow of information from gene to protein;
7. DNA-technology;
8. The phylogeny of life, and biological systematics.

For plants, fungi, and animals, subjects also include:
9. Histology, anatomi, and morphology;
10. Reproduction and embryology;
11. Fundamental physiology and ecology;
12. The chemical composition of plants and fungi.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
a) During 1st quarter continuous formative evaluation through e-tests (multi choice) via E-learn, and the solving of one assignment handed out during the last teaching week of the quarter. 80 % of the e-tests must be passed as well as satisfactory completion of the handed out assigment (Weight 1 ECTS).

b) Excercises after 2nd quarter evaluated with pass/fail and internal marking by teacher (Weight 2 ECTS).

c) Written examination after 2nd quarter. The examination consists of two parts carried out on the same day: 1) 2.5 hour examination without aid over 1st quarter curriculum (subjects 1 - 7 above), 2) 2,5 hour examination without aid over 2nd quarter curriculum (subjects 8 - 13 above). There will be 30 minuts intermission between the two examinations. One joint 7-scale mark with external marking.

Students who have taken the previous edition of the course with two separate exams, will have the opportunity to sit reexams in either or both of the separate exams of the previous course until January 2010. Students seeking this posibility must apply the the Academic Board of Studies.

Re-examination after 4th quarter.

The teaching method is based on three phase model.
