Course introduction
The course will give an overview of the history of life and an insight into the phylogenetic system and its origin

Qualifications
By the end of the course the students are expected to
1) know the fundamentals of the history of life
2) explain the phylogenetic system of animals (invertebrates and chordates)
3) describe building plans for different animal phyla and to explain the importance of the embryologic development in eumetazoans as the basis of their taxonomic position
4) identify morphological and anatomical structures and different tissues
5) describe the variation in the structures
6) understand the importance of morphological characters in relation to their function and environmental adaptation
7) be able to use special taxonomic keys to precisely identify selected organisms and their taxonomic position and to explain the criteria in practice used for this task 

Expected learning outcome
1) To provide knowledge to the student of the history of life and of the building plans and diversity of animals (invertebrater og chordater)
2) To give the student an understanding of the principles that form the basis of animal taxonomy, including embryology, morphology, and anatomy
3) To provide the student with knowledge about adaptations to the environment and the importance of modern molecular biological methods, including DNA-sequencing  

Subject overview
  1. The history of Life from the formation of the Earth to the evolution of extant phyla, including the priciples of evolution that shaped all life.
  2. Animal taxonomy and the phylogenetic system.
  3. The taxonomy and evolution of selected groups of animals, including their anatomy, morphology and tissues, embryology, development, growth, life-cycle, physiology, and ecology.
  4. Taxonomic methods: Identification organisms from phylum to genus and species.  
  5. The Zoological science history and philosophy of science

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
  1. Mandatory assignments, Pass/fail, internal evaluation  (2 ECTS)
  2. Mandatory lab work. Pass/fail, internal evaluation by teacher. (2 ECTS)
  3. Written exam. Danish 7-mark scale, external examiner. (6 ECTS)

Reexam in the same exam period or immediately thereafter

The mode of exam at the reexamination may differ from the mode of exam at the ordinary exam.



Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 30 hours
Skills training phase: 60 hours, hereof:
 - Laboratory exercises: 48 hours
 - Excursion: 12 hours

Educational activities Study phase: 10 hours
