Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
The participants are assumed to have acquired knowledge about basic chemistry and biology (from molecule to ecosystem). The student must not have followed or passed the course BB520.
Course introductionThe course gives a basic introduction to the fundamental principles of toxicology and a more thorough description of the principles and methods of ecotoxicology. The most important problems with discharge of chemicals to the environment and the subsequent adverse biological effects are described. The students acquire skills in producing experimental data, treat and present these and interpret them in relation to the scientific literature.
Expected learning outcomeAt the end of the course student is expected to be able to:
- Explain discharge, transport and degradation of chemicals to or in the environment
- Explain the mechanisms underlying the uptake, metabolization, elimination and effects in organisms
- Describe dispersal and effects of pollutants in the environment
- Explain the general principles for environmental risk assessment of chemicals
- Explain the use and effects of pesticides
- Utilize ecotoxicological scientific literature
- Treat and present ecotoxicological data
- Interpret ecotoxicological data in relation to selected ecotoxicological primary literature
Subject overviewDuring the lectures the following topics in toxicology and ecotoxicology are described: LC-50 determination, uptake and elimination kinetics, basic principles and methods in ecotoxicology, the toxicology and ecotoxicology of chlorinated hydrocarbons (DDT, PCB, dioxins), hydrocarbons, metals, endocrine disrupting chemicals, nitrate, acid rain, radioactive elements, pesticides and general principles for risk assessment of chemicals. The laboratory practicals have one common theme, and the practicals are therefore carried out as a small project, over which one report is written.

Assessment and marking:
(a) The practicals report is evaluated passed/not passed by the teacher. Approval of the practicals report is a pre-requisite to pass the course.
(b) Four hour written examination with a desk calculator and a dictionary as the only allowed means of aid. External censorship. Mark after the seven step scale.
4 hours written examination where calculaters are handed out as the only exam aid. Dictionaries are allowed.
Re-examination after 2nd quarter.
Expected working hours
