Prerequisites:
A Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Environmental Technology or equivalent.
Academic preconditions:
Students taking the course are expected to:
- Have knowledge ecology and environmental issues
- Be able to use basic mathematics.
Course introductionThe aim of the course is to give the student knowledge of the applicability of mathematical modelling within the scope of environmental modelling. The students will through lectures and practical computer sessions become able to understand, analyse and discuss local and global environmental and climate change topics.
The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses [Ecology (BB510), Environmental quality and assessment of pollution in streams (BB825)], and gives an academic basis for student to apply mathematical models in the master project.
Expected learning outcomeThe learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:
- To structure a model development procedure including: sensitivity analyses, parameterization, calibration and validation procedures.
- Create perform and analyse valid model scenarios.
- Discuss the specific choice of integration routines in dynamic modellering.
- Discuss and relate/compare model results on a scientific level
Subject overviewThe following main topics are contained in the course:
- Introduction to environmental modelling
- Classification of models: empirical models, dynamic models
- Numerical methods in environmental modelling
- Terrestrial modelling
- Water quality models
- Atmospheric modelling
- Environmental management models
- eco-toxicological models
- Climate change and climate adaptation modelling
- Case-studies
- Coupling dynamic models and GIS-related models

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
- Mandatory assignments, danish 7 mark scale, internal examiner. (04007402).
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 14 hours
Skills training phase: 36 hours, hereof:
- Tutorials: 30 hours
- Laboratory exercises: 6 hours
Educational activities
Focus is on scientific studies, reflections and development of collaboration skills through group work
Educational formIn lectures the environmental and model challenges are presented for each topic. This is followed by practical assignment where the student in groups are developing models to simulate specific environmental problems. The assignments are either handed in as small reports or presented for the class.
Language
This course is taught in English, if international students participate. Otherwise the course is taught in Danish.
