Academic preconditions:
Passed BB510 or similar knowledge on aquatic ecology
Course introductionThe students should learn the scientific basis for targeting and for performing survey of environmental quality in streams and they should be able to perform technical evaluations of environmental quality in streams.
Expected learning outcomeBy the end of the course the student should be able to:
• Use biological and physical/chemical methods for assessment of the environmental quality of streams.
• Establish realistic targets for stream quality in relation to watershed and discuss how the targets could be met.
• Enterpretate and discuss the most common fauna indeces.
• Perform hydrometrical measurements and calculations.
Subject overviewAdministration of streams in relation to the EU Water Frame Directive. Hydrometry and river hydraulics. Inportant physical parameters in streams. Stream ecology and and stream pollution. General biotic indeces and fauna indeces with indicator species that target pollution with organic matter.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
Participation in the residential course is mandatory. Pass/fail; internal evaluation by teacher (04013212)
Assessment and marking:
Oral exam based on a project assignment, Danish 7 mark scale, internal examiner
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 8 hours
Skills training phase: 44 hours, hereof:
- Tutorials: 4 hours
- Laboratory exercises: 40 hours
Educational activities
Study phase: 16 hours
Residential course in Svanninge Bjerge 5 days, week 10.
Language
This course is taught in English, if international students participate. Otherwise the course is taught in Danish.
