Students who have passed BF506 Exhibit and Communication Techniques are not allowed to take this course.

Course introduction
The course aims to give participants an introduction to the linkaged between theory and practical experience in the relation to the exhibition and communication techniques used by staff members in museums and science communication institutions (zoos, aquariums, natural history museums, culture-historical museums, nature schools and science centres).

Expected learning outcome
Competence aims:Through the course participants will acquire skills, which enable them to master:

  • Selection and transforming of scientific content to different communication situations in relation to object, exhibits etc. involved in the situation.
  • Evaluate various communication tools related to the desired communication message and target group
  • Plan, execute and reflect their own and others' communication in different situations through the use of presented tools

In addition, the course provides insight into methods of audience analysis.

  • Demonstrate knowledge of current theories of exhibition and communication techniques - including communication theory and didactic theories
  • Reflect on the selected communication strategy’s possibilities and limitations
Subject overview
This course investigates how scientific material is transformed and communicated to different target groups - including families, schools and adult groups.
Through seminars and field trips to a number of science communicators and museums we will be introduced to the discussions, decisions and considerations to be faced when communicating scientific content to different target groups. Throughout the course the students work alone or in groups, under supervision, with a self-chosen communication case. The case is to be transformed into a communication product e.g. an exhibition, a Web page, teaching materials, presentations. The communication cases are to be formulated in cooperation with a communication institution.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Written report, with oral presentation. The written report must contain a description of and theoretical reflections on the produced communication product. The communication product is presented and discussed at the oral examination.

Re-examination after 2nd quarter.

The written report can be written in groups of 2-4 participants with individual guidance from the teacher. Each individual's contribution must be an entity to be assessed individually. The shared part of the report must not exceed 50%. The oral presentation is prepared on the basis of individually formulated questions.

The extent of communication product will be decided together with the teacher. The scope of the report is max. 5 pages. For group assignments the maximum is 10 pages for groups with 2 participants and an additional 2 pages per participant.
The oral presentation lasts 30 minutes. Incl. assessment.

This course is taught in Danish.

Remarks
This course replaces BF506, which will be held for the last time in spring 2013. In spring 2013 there will only be held a master version of this course.

This course is compulsory in the profile Media and Communication.
