Academic preconditions:
Passed bachelors degree. The course may be taken by master's students however, please notice that this is a PhD course and thus the level is very high.

Course introduction
To introduce participants to the theory and use of classical protein purification methods.

Expected learning outcome


Subject overview
The course consists of a theoretical part where the theory behind the methods used is discussed, and a practical part. In the practical part the students will purify a protein. The methods used include cell organelle separation by centrifugation, salt precipitation, ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration, protein determination and photometric enzyme assay. The participants are expected to document purity and to determine molecular weights using gel electrophoresis.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Approval of report followed by an oral examination. External examiner. Grades according to the Danish 7-point scale. The report may be worked out in groups of two students. The examination may also be in groups of two - with individual evaluation.

The teaching method is based on three phase model.
