Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
Students must have passed BB501 Biology - from Molecule to Ecosystem or BB508 and are expected to be familiar with the contents of BMB501 Biomolecular chemistry and BMB502 Enzymes and Membranes.
Course introductionThe course will give an introduction to the structure and function of eukaryotic cells at the molecular level. Biochemical processes in animal and plant cells will be presented with a special focus on metabolic pathways in mammalian cells and their regulation.
QualificationsStudents will:
• understand the general chemical basis of cellular processes and the principles for their regulation
• obtain basal experimental skills in Biochemistry
• collect data from practical experiments and analyze and interpreted the results from their theoretical background
• be able to write a report based on own observations and interpretations
• obtain a foundation for advanced courses on experimental-biological disciplines

5. Oxidative Phosphorylation
6. Glycogen Metabolisme
7. Metabolism of lipids including fatty acid biosynthesis and degradation
8. The Photosynthetic Light Reactions and mechanisms of CO2 fixation
9. The Integration of Metabolism
In addition a guest lecture will present a cutting edge lecture within a selected topic.
Regulatory enzymes and oxidative phosphorylation will be the subject of 2 laboratory exercises.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
a) 4 hour written open-book examination. External examiner with grades according to the Danish 7-point scale.
b) Laboratory reports of the practicals are evaluated pass/fail by the instructor. Tha laboratory reports account for 1 ECTS.
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
