Academic preconditions:
BMB502 Enzymes and membranes must be attended. Knowledge of BMB503 Fundamental biochemistry is a prerequisite .

Course introduction
The course aims to give an understanding of metabolic pathways in mammalian cells and their regulation at a molecular level. Participants will gain insights into signal transduction pathways incl. hormones, growth factors, receptors, kinases, calcium and transcription factors.

The glucose-fatty acid cycle as well as integration of metabolism will be illustrated via a practical exercise/obligatory assignment.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Number of evaluations: 3.

a) Practicals/Obligatory assignment (3rd quarter). Internal censorship by teachers. Pass/fail (2 ECTS). The report is made by three students together. The report must be passed in order to take the final electronic exam.
b) Oral presentation and report (max 5 pages) that cover metabolic disease. Internal evaluation by teacher, pass/fail (2 ECTS). The presentation and report are made by 4-5 students together. The activity must be passed to take the final electronic exam.
c) Written take-home exam. Eksternal censorship, 7-point grading scale. The exam will be released via Black Board and the stuedent will get 4 hours to answer the questions and submit the answers via Black Board as a word or pdf file.

Re-examination after 2nd quarter. br> The mode of exam at the reexamination may differ from the mode of exam at the ordinary exam.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

Forelæsninger (44 timer hvoraf 16 afholdes som kollokvier), eksaminatorier (26 timer) og laboratorieøvelser (10 timer).
