Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
Students must have passed BMB504 Fundamental Molecular Biologi and should be familiar with the material in BMB507 Fundamental Microbiology.

Course introduction
To give students general knowledge about the pathogenic properties of microorganisms and their pathological importance.

Qualifications
Students will gain familiarity to pathogenic microorganisms and will be able to:
- understand and describe the pathological importance of microorganisms.
- understand and describe host-pathogen interactions.
- understand and describe the molecular mechanisms underlying microbial pathogenesis.

By reading and presenting peer-reviewed original publications, the students will be able to understand and evaluate research papers describing molecular genetic studies of biological problems.

Expected learning outcome

Subject overview
The following subjects will be presented and discussed:
- The biology of pathogenic microorganisms.
- Host-pathogen relations.
- Virulence determinants of microorganisms.
- Microbial pathogenesis.
- The pathological importance of microorganisms, including epidemiology, diagnostics, prevention and medical treatment of infectious disease.

Literature
There isn't any litterature for the course at the moment.

Syllabus
See syllabus.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Number of evaluations: 2.

Oral exam. Internal evaluation. Passed/not passed.

Project repport. Internal evaluation. Passed/not passed.

Further remarks about evaluation:
Oral project group examination, individual marking (pass/not pass) with internal censoring.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
