Kan IKKE tilmeldes via Student Selvbetjening!

Undervisningen starter i august uge 32.max 38 studerende.Kurset er identisk med BMB526 som er udbudt i foråret 2009. Der er ledige plader på kurset, som vil blive tildelt efter først til mølle princippet.

Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
BMB503 Fundamental Biochemistry and BMB504 Fundamental Molecular Biology must be followed.

Course introduction
1. To give the student theoretical knowledge of the molecular processes underlying differentiation of eukaryotic cells. In this case we focus on fat cell (adipocyte) differentiation.
2. To give the student an experimental introduction to the commonly used methods for the analysis of the regulation of gene expression in mammalian cells.
3. Through a project-oriented course to prepare to the students for their bachelor/ITEK/ speciale project.

Expected learning outcome
1. Knowledge of differentiation of eukaryotic cells.
2. Know-how of experimental procedures to analyse gene expression and the regulation threof in mammalian cells.
3. Skills in research planning, interpretation and trouble shooting.

Subject overview
Theory:
Theoretical introduction to adipocyte differentiation with special focus on transcriptional regulation.
The role of the adipose tissue in insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and the regulaiton of appetite.

Experimentally:
Purification of RNA
cDNA synthesis
Real-time qPCR
Extraction of nuclear proteins
Radioactive labelling of DNA oligos
Electrophoretic mobility shift assay
(Possibly more techniques suggested by the students)

Literature
There isn't any litterature for the course at the moment.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Project assignment based on lab. work. Pass/fail, internal evaluation by teacher.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

Forelæsninger (30 timer) og laboratorieøvelser (70 timer). Intensivt kursus med lange dage (10-12 timer) må forventes nogle af dagene.
