Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
Knowledge of BMB503 or BMB532 Fundamental biochemistry is expected.

Course introduction
The course aims to give an understanding of metabolic pathways in mammalian cells and their regulation at a molecular level. Participants will gain insights into signal transduction pathways incl. hormones, growth factors, receptors, kinases, calcium and transcription factors.

Expected learning outcome

Subject overview
  1. Regulation of glycolysis/gluconeogenesis/TCA
  2. Lipidabsorption, transport and lipoproteins
  3. Membrane trafficking
  4. Fatty acid degradation
  5. Fatty acid synthesis
  6. Compleks lipidsynthesis
  7. Amino acid metabolism
  8. Signal transduction
  9. Regulation of metabolism incl. glucose-fatty acid cycle
  10. Integration of metabolism
  11. Ca++-signalling
  12. Metabolic diseases

The glucose-fatty acid cycle as well as integration of metabolism will be illustrated via a practical exercise/obligatory assignment.

Furthermore relevant scientific theoretical and ethical aspects related to the topics of the course will be discussed.

Literature

  • Øvelsesvejledning.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
The course is evaluated by a portfolio examination, which consists of two different activities:

  1. An individual exercise report, which accounts for 25 % of the final grade. Internal censorship.
  2. 4-hours electronic exam without any books/notes etc. This activity accounts for 75 % of the final grade. Internal censorship.

The final grade will be announced when all activities have been completed. Grade after the Danish 7-mark scale.

Re-examination no later than 6 weeks after the ordinary examination. The mode of exam at the reexamination may differ from the mode of exam at the ordinary exam.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

Forelæsninger (36 timer), eksaminatorier (26 timer) og laboratorieøvelser (10 timer).
