Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
Bachelors degree and that the basic BM course in Molecular Biology of RNA(BMB517) have been passed.

Course introduction
This course will continue directly from the basic course on RNA to give a more advanced understanding of RNA structure and function in biological systems, together with biotechnological applications.

Qualifications
Students will become proficient at investigating the three-dimensional structures of macromolecules (in particular RNA) and interactions with other macromolecules by combining theory with hands-on computer graphic techniques for molecular modeling. Attention will also be given to becoming skilled at communicating scientific information via oral presentations and written reports, and these competencies will be put to use by the students in their individual project.

Expected learning outcome

Subject overview
Structure/function relationship in RNAs: studies by computer graphics Recognition motifs for RNA-protein binding Gene regulation via RNA-protein interactions Modulation of RNA function by methylation and other modifications RNA editing Regulation of gene expression by siRNAs and microRNAs Biotechnological use of catalytic nucleic acids for gene sile

Literature
There isn't any litterature for the course at the moment.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Reexamination after 2nd quarter.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

Educational activities

Language
This course is taught in English.

Remarks
Lectures will be held in English by a native speaker. Participants will be helped to improve their ability to communicate scientific ideas in spoken and written English. An IT expert will instruct the graphics sessions. The course will be run one quarter after the basic Molecular Biology of RNA course, so the two courses can be taken in consecutive semesters.
