Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
Bachelor's degree in bioscience with courses in biochemistry, molecular biology and microbiology.

Students with a BMB803 in the 10 ECTS-version are not allowed to follow this course.



Course introduction
To introduce students to the latest advances in selected aspects of molecular studies of bacteria through critical discussion of research literature and practical experience in the laboratory. The selected topics will cover applications of molecular genetics and structural biology. They will be organized around the common theme of antibiotic resistance in pathogenic bacteria.

Expected learning outcome
After completing the course, students should be able to:
  • evaluate scientific results in the original research literature
  • present scientific results in an oral seminar given in English
Subject overview
Lectures and literature discussion on the following topics
  1. Evolution of antibiotic resistance
  2. Multidrug efflux pumps
  3. Antibiotics inhibiting ribosome function

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
  1. Completion of the assigned course work. (01011612).
Assessment and marking:
  1. Project assignment and oral examination with grade on the Danish 7-point scale with internal examination (5 ECTS). (01011602).

Reexamination in the same exam period or immediately thereafter.

The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 8 hours
Skills training phase: 28 hours, hereof:
 - Tutorials: 28 hours

Educational activities
The study phase is used for preparation of seminars, reading articles and presentation of the final report.
