Academic preconditions:
Bachelor degree in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or Biomedicine.

Course introduction
The course has been designed to acquaint the students with the most recent advances in the field of eukaryotic metabolism. A selected set of topics is actively discussed during the course evolving around regulation of cellular lipid- and glucose homeostasis in eukaryotes.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course the students will be competent to:

- Discuss molecular mechanisms underlying metabolic regulation on a genetic, cellular and organismal level.
- Integrate diverse experimental observations into working models of metabolic pathway regulation.
- Characterize patho-biological phenotypes based on genetic or hormonal dysregulation of metabolism as well as on lipid signalling or trafficking defects.
- Explain basic concepts of modelling metabolic pathways to obtain an overall system biological view of biochemical regulation.
- Clarify the relationship between metabolic disorders like insulin resistance, diabetes or atherosclerosis and the consequence of metabolic syndrome.
- Describe new and innovative therapeutic approaches to lower cholesterol levels, avoid insulin resistance and treat obesity.
-Use current experimental techniques to measure metabolites in eukaryotic cells.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
(a) Oral exam. Pass/fail, internal evaluation by teacher.

All students are required during the course to 1) present a research article and 2) be opponents with respect to other students for being admitted to the oral exam.

Reexam after 4th quarter.

The teaching method is based on three phase model.
