Course introductionThe purpose of this course is to give an understanding of the issues involved in computer security, for prevention and detection of security problems.
Expected learning outcomeThe student is expected to achieve knowledge about security problems in stand-alone or network-based applications, specifically to be able to identify:
• essential security problems in a specific computer system (perform risk analysis), and model these security concerns in systems by adapting standard security models
• methods for establishing access control, authentification and authorization for securing systems and data
• security problems related to confidentiality, integrity, availability, accountability, non-repudiation and reliability; and be able to propose safeguards to handle these problems
• and describe fundamental properties of standard symmetrical and public-key encryption algorithms
• the kinds of problem areas where encryption is applicable, and the kinds of problems which may have to be considered when applying encryption
Subject overviewSecurity requirements, models and evaluation, identification and authentication, access control, the security kernel, security in example operating systems, challenges to security, security in distributed systems and on the World Wide Web, basic cryptography, network security.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
Oral exam. External examiner. Marks according to the Danish 7-scale.
Obligatory reports. Passed/not passed.
A 30 minute oral examination with 30 minutes preparation. In addition, there is a mandatory project which must be approved before taking the examination.

The teaching method is based on three phase model.

This course is taught in Danish or English, depending on the lecturer. However, if international students participate, the teaching language will always be English.
