Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
Students taking the course are expected to:
  • Have knowledge corresponding to bachelor level in pharmacy
  • The main contents of the course “Drug Transport & Drug Delivery Systems” or similar are expected to be known

Course introduction
The students should after completing the course possess well-founded knowledge about the most important experimental methods in (biop)harmaceutics, as well as skills regarding the methods used. The students should know the methods fundamental strengths and weaknesses (limitations), which is important in relation to pharmaceutical research.

The course builds on the knowledge acquired in the courses Fa501, Fa502, Fa503 and Fa504, as well as the master course ”Drug transport and drug delivery systems”and gives an academic basis for performing a master project within biopharmaceutics or a research project, that is part of the degree.

In relation to the competence profile of the degree it is the explicit focus of the course to:
  • Provide knowledge about and propagate understanding for the importance of dosage form design for drug absorption
  • Build skills in the appropriate use of experimental methods, including design of experiments within formulation design and process-development
  • Provide competences within development, production and quality assurance of pharmaceutical preparations

Expected learning outcome
The learning objective of the course is that the student demonstrates the ability to:
  • select and discuss pro´s and con´s of a concept or a technology appropriate for solving a task within research, development, production or quality assurance of pharmaceutical products
  • handle/use equipment typically available in pahramceutical research- and development laboratories
  • document correct use of methods with a focus on assuring reliable and reproducible results in accordance with current rules and regulations
  • report and convey research findings, both in writing and orally

Subject overview
The following main topics are contained in the course:
  • Self-contained planning, performing and reporting of laboratory experiments with (bio)pharmaceutics
  • Appropriate handling of chemicals and equipment during experimental work at pharmaceutical research-/development-laboratories
  • Literature research in pharmaceutical, life-science and medical databases
  • Evaluation of primary and secondary literature
  • Planning and documentation of experimental lab work incl design of experiments and evaluation of results by statistical means
  • Writing of scientific reports and manuscripts for journal articles
  • Oral and poster-presentation of experimental findings
  • The content of the course will vary depending on the needs of participants and availability of teachers/supervisors. It is natural to take up methods, which fit eith the participants master-projects, such as e.g. drug solid state, solubility, dissolution rate, permeability across biological and biomimetic barriers, liposomes as drug carriers, nanoparticles, bio-adhesion; particle size analysis; the role of drug transporters on drug absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion (ADME)

Literature
There isn't any litterature for the course at the moment.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 30 hours
Skills training phase: 25 hours, hereof:
 - Tutorials: 17 hours
 - Laboratory exercises: 8 hours

Educational activities
The final two/third of the course consist of compulsory project work under the guidance of supervisor (typically the supervisor of the master-project), where the produce methodological projects-reports, which form the basis for evaluation.Educational form

Study phase / project work: as deemed relevant with respect to the envisaged master project.

Activities envisaged for the study phase / project work
  • Consolidation and follow-up of lectures, seminars and lab-exercises
  • Self-contained application of acquired knowledge and skills to individual establishment, testing and application of other experimental techniques (under supervision)

Language
This course is taught in Danish or English, depending on the lecturer.
