Course introduction
The purpose of the course is to give the student a broad understanding of the fundamental principles governing nature, both on a macroscopic and on a microscopic (particle) scale.

Expected learning outcome

Subject overview
1) Fundamental mechanics: Newton’s laws, conservation of momentum, angular momentum and energy.
2) Application of these fundamental laws at macroscopic level: Elasticity, Hooke’s law, harmonic motion. Macroscopic forces. Different phases.
3) Application of the same principles at microscopic level: Particle dynamics. Microscopic forces, fundamental forces of nature.
4) Physics at large velocities – the special theory of relativity.
5) Waves: Wavelength, frequency, energy in waves, light as a wave phenomenon.
6) The diffraction limit for observation of small objects.
7) Elementary quantum physics: The quantum concept, the Bohr model, spectroscopy.

Literature

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Written examination (4 hours) with external second examiner. Marks: according to the 13-point marking scale. Two or three required written assignments. Approved reports in both laboratory exercises. Re-examination after 4th. Quater.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

Forelæsninger (30 timer). Eksaminatorier: (16 timer).
