Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
FY503 Eletromagnetism I must be known.
Course introductionTo give the students basic knowledge of fundamental principles behind electromagnetic oscillations and optical waves. The course provides general conceptual background for understanding of basic optical phenomena.
QualificationsAfter the course, the students should be able to:
- understand basic phenomena in optics
- design and analyze setups used to project and record optical images
- use optical and spectroscopic instruments
Expected learning outcomeSubject overviewThe course consists of one 5 ECTS teaching block.
Theory part (3 ECTS):
1. Maxwell’s equations (electromagnetic waves; superposition principle)
2. Light waves (Huygen’s principle; refraction and reflection)
3. Mirrors and lenses (eye; telescope; microscope)
4. Interference phenomenon (multilayer coatings, Fabry-Perot interferometer)
5. Diffraction (resolution limit)
6. Gratings and spectra (spectrometer)
Experimental part (2 ECTS):
3 experiments:
1. Optical microscopy.
2. Optical reflection and transmission
3. Optical diffraction
