Academic preconditions:
FY503 Electromagnetism I must be known.

Course introduction
To give the students basic knowledge of fundamental principles behind electromagnetic phenomena. The course provides a general conceptual background for understanding alternating current circuits, the nature of light as electromagnetic waves and basic optics including simple optical instruments.

Qualifications
After the course, the students should be able to:

- understand basic phenomena in optics
- design and analyze setups used to project and record optical images
- use optical and spectroscopic instruments

Expected learning outcome
Having followed the course, the students will be able to:

  • describe and perform calculations of currents and voltages of alternating current circuits including the evaluation of the impedance of different components and different types of circuits
  • explain the physical meaning of Maxwell’s equations and of the physical quantities entering in their definition
  • mathematically describe basic diffraction phenomena and explain the fundamental limitations its places on resolution of optical/spectral instruments
  • describe interference phenomena among harmonic waves in one and two spatial dimensions
  • analyze beam paths in geometrical optical systems with up to two components
  • explain how an optical microscope works and sketch the imaging and the illumination paths
  • describe the polarization properties of light and its impact upon interaction with matter
  • understand and describe reflection and transmission of light on interfaces of transparent materials
  • report their laboratory experiments in a formally correct and complete way (including result analysis and discussion and error discussion)
Subject overview
Lectures and tutorials (3 ECTS):
  1. Inductance and alternating current circuits

  4. Mirrors and lenses (ray tracing; optical instruments)
  5. Interference phenomena (Michelson and Fabry-Perot interferometers)
  6. Diffraction (diffraction and resolution limit)
  7. Gratings and spectra (spectrometer and x-ray diffraction)
  8. Polarization

Experimental part (2 ECTS):
Experiments related to the following topics:

  1. AC circuits
  2. Optical reflection and transmission
  3. Optical microscopy.
  4. Optical diffraction and polarization
