Academic preconditions:
The first year must be passed. FY509 Thermal physics must have been attended.
	
Course introductionTo introduce the participants to building and testing of physical models.
Expected learning outcomeAfter completing the course, the student will be able to
1. Find a suitable model for a physical problem 
2. Combine mathematical and simulational tools 
3. Assess the validity of the obtaiined results
Subject overview1. Physical models, reality and mathematics.
2. Computer simulations as scientific tool
3. Fluctuations of physical observables 
4. Phenomenological modeling: Landau-Ginzburg theory, Brownian motion
5. Toy models: Markov chains and the Ising spin model.
6. Data interpretation.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
- Mini-project with internal second examiner. Passed/not passed.
- Oral exam based on the project. Internal second examiner.
Reexamination in the same exam period or immediately thereafter. The mode of exam at the re-examination may differ from the mode of exam at the ordinary exam.
Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
Intro phase: 14 hours
Skills training phase: 26 hours, hereof:
 - Tutorials: 14 hours
 - Laboratory exercises: 12 hours
