Comment:
Obligatorisk kursus på Nanobioscience studieretningen. Afvikles med 2x3 timers undervisning per uge. Kan tages som valgfrit kursus af andre interesserede fysik- eller kemistuderende. Kontakt Adam Cohen Simonsen for yderligere spørgsmål.

Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
The science year (first year) must have been attended.

Course introduction
This course will treat the core topics of nanobioscience including principles of design and characterization of specific systems within nanobioscience. The aim is a thorough understanding of important concepts and principles governing the structure and function of nanostructures in biological and artificial systems.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

• Locate, read and understand selected scientific papers in the field. Use of the information in these papers to advance the students own projects.
• Use the theory from the course to make simple calculations of self-assembly processes.
• Make simple calculations relating to molecular monolayers based on van der Waals equation of state.
• Describe methods for biological functionalization of solid surfaces including supported mono and double layers, self-assembled monlayers (SAM) and patterning by microcontact printing
• Use central concepts and related to DNA nanochemistry
• Use central concepts related to bio-inorganic nanochemistry.

Subject overview
Topics included in the course are:
• Information retrieval, article-search and reading. Presentation of articles
• Nanostructures on solid surfaces including pattering and lithographical techniques.
• Nanoparticles
• Energy and motility on the nanoscale.
• Biological and bio-inspired nanostructures including membrane structures, DNA-nanochemistry, protein aggregates as well as other structures based on natural or artifical building blocks.
• Technologically applied nanobiosystems such as sensors and drug delivery systems.
