Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
The science year (first year) must have been attended.

Course introduction
The course treats the core elements of modern biologically inspired nanoscience inculding size effects at the nanoscale, self assembly and examples of functional nanostructures. The goal is fundamental understanding of basic mechanisms and principles governing the structure and function of nanostructures in biological and bio-inspired systems.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:
  • Read and explain selected parts of scientific papers in the field.
  • Apply relevant theory to make simple calculations on phenomena in biological nanosystems.
  • Apply the theory of Langmuir monolayers including simple calculations with van der Waals equation of state.
  • Describe methods for biological functionalization of solid surfaces including supported mono and double layers, self assembled monolayers and microcontact printing.
  • Use central concepts related to DNA nanochemistry.
Subject overview
Topics in the course include:
  • Introduction to nanoscience
  • Size effects at the nanoscale.
  • Driving forces for self assembly
  • Thermodynamics of self assembly
  • Diffusion
  • The role of water in biology and the hydrophobic effect
  • Self assembly og amphiphiles including micelle and membrane formation
  • Liposomes
  • Nano particles and Quantum Dots
  • Langmuir monolayers and van der Waals equation of state
  • Self assembly on solid surfaces.
  • DNA nanotechnology
  • Sensors and drug delivery
