Course introduction
The course treats the central topics of biological nanoscience with an emphasis on characteristic size effects at the nanoscale. The aim is a fundamental understanding of the basic mechanisms and principles governing the structure and function of nanostructures in biological and bio-inspired systems.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

  • Describe relevant physical effects and phenomena at the nanoscale.
  • Apply relevant theory to make calculations on biological nanosystems.
  • Describe relevant experiments and characterization techniques.
  • Use central concepts related to DNA nanochemistry.
Subject overview
Topics in the course include:

  • Introduction to nanoscience
  • Size effects and forces at the nanoscale.
  • Diffusion.
  • The role of water in biology and the hydrophobic effect.
  • Thermodynamics of self assembly.
  • Self assembly og amphiphiles  and colloids.
  • Self assembly on solid surfaces. Adsorption isotherms.
  • Langmuir monolayers and van der Waals equation of state
  • Supported membranes.
  • Charaterization tools for biomolecular interfaces.
  • DNA nanotechnology.
Literature
  • Israelachvili: Intermolecular and surface forces , 3rd ed., 2010.
  • Noter, slides og opgaver som udleveres og er tilgængelige på Blackboard.
