Academic preconditions:
The first year must have been attended.

Course introduction
The course treats the central topics of colloid and interface science with an emphasis on characteristic size effects at the nanoscale. The aim is an understanding of the fundamental mechanisms and principles governing the structure and function of nanostructures in biological and bio-inspired systems. The course includes experimental exercises involving topics from the theoretical part of the course.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

  • Describe relevant physical effects and phenomena at the nanoscale.
  • Apply relevant theory to make calculations on biological nanosystems.
  • Describe relevant experiments and characterization techniques.
Subject overview
Topics in the course include:

  • var der Waals forces and hydrophobic interactions.
  • Theory of diffusion
  • Surface effects, capillary effects and wetting.
  • Laplace pressure
  • Thermodynamic theory of self-assembly.
  • Self-assembly of amphiphiles and colloids. Micelles.
  • Self assembly on surfaces. Adsorption isotherms (Langmuir and BET isotherms).
  • Langmuir monolayers and van der Waals equation of state
  • Introduction to the programming language Matlab.
  • Introduction to measurement statistics and data analysis.
  • Introduction to characterization tools for biological surfaces.
Literature
  • Israelachvili: Intermolecular and surface forces, 3rd ed., 2010.
  • Noter, slides og opgaver som udleveres og er tilgængelige på Blackboard.
