Course introduction
The course gives an introduction to a range of subjects in fundamental physics. The focus is on topics that are relevant for pharmacists and biologists. The course will provide a conceptual understanding of physical phenomena and develop the ability to mathematically treat simple systems. Experimental exercises and demonstrations constitute an integrated part of the course.

Expected learning outcome
After completing the course the student is expected to be able to:
  • Apply physical principles and concepts to estimate the behavior of a physical system.
  • Identify the physical laws and methods that should be applied to a given physical problem.
  • Apply simple mathematical tools to solve a physical problem.
  • Evaluate the validity of own computed results.
  • Perform physical experiments and interpret the results of own experiments.
  • Describe the outcome of physical experiments that are part of the course.

  1. Mechanics: Kinematics, Newtons laws, Statics, Mechanical energy, Hookes law, Harmonic oscillations.
  2. Fluids and Transport: Hydrostatics, Pressure, Buoyancy, Fluids, Viscosity, Diffusion, Brownian motion.
  3. Thermodynamics: Heat, Work, Energy, Laws of thermodynamics, sEntropy, Ideal gasses, Osmosis.
  4. Electromagnetism and Optics: Electrical and magnetic fields, Light, Reflection, Refraction, Absorbtion (Lambert-Beers law), Polarization, Optical activity.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
  1. Full attendance is required at the lab exercises. A report is written for 1 experiment while the remaining experiments are evaluated orally in class. Exercises are evaluated jointly (passed/not passed) by the teacher. Exercises constitute 1 ECTS out of the 5 ECTS in the course. (07005312).
  2. Short oral exam lasting 5-7 minutes. An individual portfolio folder will be part of the exam consisting of one lab report and 2 approved home assignments from the classes. Exam is evaluated with passed/not passed and internal censorship. The exam constitutes 4 ECTS out of the 5 ECTS in the course.  (07005302).

Re-examination after 4th quarter.
The mode of exam at the re-examination may differ from the mode of exam at the ordinary exam.
