Course introduction
The course aims at giving the students knowledge of how basic physics works, an ability to set up and solve simple physical models and to perform and interpret simple experiments

Expected learning outcome
After completing the course, a student will expectedly be able to

- identify the physical principles needed to solve specific problems
- apply the mathematical tools required for their solutions
- assess the quality of the results obtained
- perform and interpret simple measurements related to the course syllabus.

Subject overview
2nd quarter:
1. Fundamental mechanics: Newton's laws, conservation laws.
2. Applications: Hookes law, harmonic motion, resonance, gravitation and planetary orbits. Contact and frictional forces.
3. Waves: Wave length, frequency and energy of waves, light and sound waves.
4. Modern physics: two hrs. lecture on modern applications and implications of physics.
5. Experiment 1: 4 hrs.
6. Experiment 2: 4 hrs.

3rd quarter:
7. Fluids. Equilibrium properties and non-viscous flow (the flow of dry water).
8. Temperature, heat, and the laws of thermodynamics.
9. Kinetic gas theory.
10. Heat transport and diffusion.
11. Modern physics perspective: a 2 hrs. lecture illustrating how physics and other sciences interact.
12. Experiment 3: 4 hrs.
13. Experiment 4: 4 hrs.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
2nd quarter:
a) Laboratory exercises in 2nd quarter that are evaluated continuously. Evaluated jointly after 2nd quater. Pass/fail. Internal evaluation by the teacher (weight 1 ECTS)
b) A 4 hour written examination after 2nd quarter that is evaluated according to the Danish 7-point marking scale. Internal evaluation (weight 3 ECTS)
c) A number of mandatory assignments which account for 1 ECTS of the total for the course (pass/fail, internal examiner). These assignments are not part of the first year test.

3rd quarter:
d) Laboratory exercises in 3rd quarterthat are evaluated continuously. Evaluated jointly after 3rd quarter. Pass/fail. Internal evaluation by the teacher (weight 1 ECTS)
e) Project assignment after the 3rd quarter that is evaluated according to the Danish 7-point marking scale. Internal evaluation (weight 4 ECTS)

Re-exam after 4th quater
The mode of exam at the re-examination may differ from the mode of exam at the ordinary exam.
