Course introductionTo achieve an operational knowledge of quantum mechanics of simple systems
Expected learning outcomeAfter completing the course the student is expected to be able to:
• be able to carry out mathematical calculations on simple quantum systems
• achieve an ability to use the Dirac formalism and the abstract formalism of quantum mechanics
• work with angular moments and perform perturbation calculations of spherical symmetric systems
• explain the energy spectrum of Hydrogen
• explain the consequences of identical particles
• explain and apply the examples from atomic and molecular physics treated in the course>
Subject overview1. Analytic solutions of the harmonic oscillator, with and without ladder operators
2. The formalism of quantum mechanics
3. Spherical symmetric systems, the Hydrogen atom
4. Angular moments and coupling of angular moments
5. Time dependent perturbation theory, Fermi’s golden rule
6. Identical particles
7. Examples from atom and molecular physics.
