Academic preconditions:
Bachelor's degree in physics

Course introduction
 To give an introduction to the theory of general relativity and an introduction the evolution, composition and structure of the Universe.

Expected learning outcome
After completing the course the student is expected to:

  • have basic knowledge of general relativity
  • demonstrate familiarity with the basic phenomena in cosmology
  • explain the basic features of cosmological models, including the system of equations for the evolution of the Universe and its solutions.
  • demonstrate knowledge of the evolution of the early Universe.
Subject overview
General relativity: equivalence principle, covariant and contravariant tensors, curvature tensor, Einstein's equation, FRW metric.

Cosmology: Hubble redshift and microwave background radiation, cosmological models, the early Universe.

  • Ta-Pei Cheng: Relativity, Gravitation and Cosmology -- A Basic Introduction, second edition 2010, Oxford University Press.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Oral exam. Danish 7 mark scale, internal examiner (5 ECTS).

The oral examination is based on a project assignment prepared by the candidate.

Reexamination after 2nd quarter.

The teaching method is based on three phase model.
