Course introduction
The students will study a particular chemical topic in groups. Experimental (e.g. synthesis, spectroscopic, analytical etc) and litterature work will be carried out.

Expected learning outcome

Subject overview
The teachers formulate a number of project topics from which the students can choose. In groups of 2-4 students a literature search is carried out over the first two weeks through which the students discover the present state-of-the-art concerning their topic. On the basis og the knowledge gained they discuss with the teacher experimental work that can be reasonably carried out within the Department of Chemistry and the students need to make a critical asssessment over what facts are important. This might include performing synthetic experiments or making spectroscopic or other measurements. Thus aspects of what research work entails is introduced to the students. Over the next 6 weeks the studetns carry out the necessary experimental work. During this time each gropu will hold a seminar about their project (45 minuts). A poster describing the problem and the results is prepared and the project is completed by a plenary debate (poster session) where eash gropu defend their report. Posters prepared in 2003 were displayed in the Chemical Education section of the annual Danish Chemical Society meeting in june at SDU. In 2004 the studetns will also be encouraged to publish their work in this way. examples of project topics in 2003, Extraction of chromium from ores, Pigments, Blue and Mercury in bones.

Literature
De studerende skal selv finde litteraturlister relevant for deres projekt

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Internal approval of poster, experimental work and oral defence og project. Passed/not passed.

Date of exam
The ordinary exam takes place on June 10, 2004

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

The course consists of a mixture of student presentation, group work, independent studies, literature search, laboratory work and plenary debate. In addition, presentation of the posters at the annual Danish Chemical Society meeting in June af SDU is encouraged. The specific contants of the course will vary depending on the individual teacher. Apart from a scheduled meeting each week with the whole class of one hour (time to be decided on February 16th), there will be no specific timetable for the course. Meetings with the advising teacher for each project will be arranged during the course. Thus the studetns are responsible for planning their own schedule over libary, experimental, discussion and result documentation work (total of app. 60h).
