Course introductionThe aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge of practical analytical chemistry at such a level that the acquired knowledge can contribute to the theoretical understanding of fundamental chemistry and to a general understanding of experimental science.
Expected learning outcomeAfter the course, the students are expected to be able to:
- work independently and safely in an experimental chemical laboratoriun
- relate simple experiments to theoretical knowledge within basic chemistry
- carry out chemical titrations with reasonable accuracy
- determine concentrations from titrations and eqilibrium constants and relate pH-calculations to the titration curves for acid/base titrations
- employ analytical experiments solving the identity of a simple unknown organic compound, including solubility experiments, acid/base properties, reactivity for oxidation and hydrolysis and interpretation of 13C NMR spectra
Subject overviewQuantitative inorganic analysis, including acid / base titrations and pH calculations. Organic identification, including relation of organic molecular structures to chemical and physical properties and subsequent identification of unknown compounds.
