Course introduction
The aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge of practical synthetic chemistry at such a level that the acquired knowledge can contribute to the theoretical understanding of fundamental chemistry and to a general understanding of experimental science.

Qualifications
The students will obtain a practical insight in experimental synthesis and hereby develop their ability to participate in experimental work in general and to connect observations with conclusions. Moreover, their ability to work independently and safely in an experimental laboratory will be strengthened.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

- work independently and following the security rules in a chemical synthesis laboratory including safe handling of chemicals.
- relate theoretical knowledge within basic organic chemistry to practical synthesis and purification
- conduct simple chemical synthesis from the written directions as well as work-up and justify the purity of the product
- recognize and explain simple operations in synthetic chemistry and purification including recrystallization and chromatography

Subject overview
Organic chemical synthesis, including Simple synthesis technique on a minor scale, Extraction, Thin layer chromatography, Recrystallisation, Column chromatography, Estimation of product purity.

Literature
There isn't any litterature for the course at the moment.

Website
This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None

Assessment and marking:
Continuous evaluation (including both report and active participation).

Participation in 12 hours laboratory exercises and 2 hours concluding tutorials. Approval of two written reports. Evaluated jointly. Internal evaluation by the teacher, pass/fail.

Expected working hours
