Prerequisites:
None
Academic preconditions:
Students from the Faculty of Science: KE501 Fundamental Chemistry or FF503 og FF504 must be passed.
Students from the Faculty of Engineering: K-501/KC-501 Fundamental Chemistry must be passed.
Course introductionThe aim of the course is to go through the organic chemistry in detail and systematically. Hereby the course provides a fundamental knowledge for advanced chemistry and pharmacy courses and completion of a bachelor project within organic chemistry and medicinal chemistry.
Expected learning outcomeWhen the course is finished, the student is expected to be able to:
- describe the structures of complicated organic molecules, i.e. to identify and name functional groups and structural elements and describe their stereochemical properties
- apply the knowledge of organic reaction and reagents to write down and plan syntheses in one or more synthetic steps and argue for the formation of by-products
- write down and use reaction mechanisms
- explain and analyze the stereochemical consequences of various reactions
- carry out selected operations in an organic synthetic laboratory
- prepare selected organic compounds
Subject overviewThe following topics will be treated and discussed:
- Stereochemistry
- Alkanes and their reactions
- Alkenes and their reactions
- Alkynes and their reactions
- Delocalization and resonance
- Reactions of dienes
- Substitution reactions
- Elimination reaktions
- Reaktions of alcohols, ethers og epoxides
- Aromaticity og benzene reaktions
- Reaktions of substitute benzenes
- Reactions of carbonyl compounds
- Oxidation reactions and reduction reactions
- Amines / heterocyclic compounds
- Correct behaviour in an organic synthetic laboratory
- Basic operations in an organic synthetic laboratory

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
None
Assessment and marking:
- Reports on lab exercises which are evaluated collectively, pass/fail, internal censorship by lecturer. The candidate must have passed the reports to be able to participate in the written examination. (10008812)
- Delivery of acceptable answers to 11 out of 14 mandatory assignments. The assignments are evaluated colletively, pass/fail, internal censorship by lecturer. The candidate must have passed the assignments to be able to participate in the written examination. (10008822)
- A 5 hours written examination, graded according to the 7-point scale, external censorship. (10008802)
Reexamination in the same exam period or immediately thereafter. The examination type at reexamination may differ from the one at the ordinary examination.
