Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
KE505 Organic chemistry is presupposed known; KE521 Chemistry of the elements (or KE528 Introductory inorganic chemistry) and KE523 Physical Chemistry A must be attended, KE504 Analytical spectroscopy is recommended.

TEK-students: Bachelor in Technological Science (Chemistry) or similar, or admitted to a Master of Science in Engineering - Chemistry

Course introduction
The aim of the course is to give the students a detailed knowledge about common operations used in a synthetic laboratory. Thus, the objective of the course is to provide the students with fundamental knowledge that forms the basis for the completion of a bachelor project within synthetic chemistry.

Expected learning outcome
When the course is completed the student is expected to:

  • relate theoretical knowledge of organic reactions and reaction mechanisms to carry out practical organic synthesis
  • carry out synthesis corresponding to the level in "Organic Synthesis"
  • carry out limited multi-step syntheses
  • carry out synthesis under inert atmosphere
  • describe and use different purification techniques
  • determine the purity of the compounds synthesized using analytical and spectroscopic methods
  • conduct literature searches in SciFinder
  • explain and apply safe behavior in a synthetic laboratory
Subject overview
The following topics will be treated and discussed:

  1. Precautions against accidents in the laboratory
  2. Secure behavior in a synthetic laboratory
  3. Use of SciFinder
  4. Planning synthetic work
  5. Different unit operations used in a synthetic laboratory
  6. Preparation of selected organic and inorganic compounds

This course uses e-learn (blackboard).

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
Attendance at laboratory exercises is a prerequisite for participating in the oral exam (exam b). Pass/fail, internal evaluation by teacher.

Assessment and marking:
  1. Approval of compulsory reports with theoretical questions. Joint assessment. Passed/not passed, internal evaluation by a teacher (0 ECTS). Deadline for handing in reports and report forms will be posted on Blackboard
  2. Oral exam with internal evaluation and marks according to the Danish 7-point marking scale (5 ECTS). Will be held immediately after the course. Date will be posted on Blackboard.

Re-examination right after the end of the course.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.

Undervisningen vil bestå af obligatoriske laboratorieøvelser (6 × 8 timer) og 2 timers eksaminatorier.
