Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
KE505 Organic chemistry A is presupposed known. Knowledge of cell biology is presupposed.

Course introduction
To make the participants acquainted with important parts of medicinal chemistry.

Qualifications
The course will give
- a broad overview over classes of medicinal drugs
- overview over important classes of drug targets
- knowledge of mechanism of action for representative drugs
- acquaintance with terms of medicinal chemistry
- knowledge to methods for drug discovery

Expected learning outcome
After the course the student is expected to be able to:

• Demonstrate a broad overview over compound classes in medicinal chemistry.
• Define and explain important terms in medicinal chemistry, such as agonism and antagonism, SAR, ADME, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics.
• Draw and explain the molecular mechanisms of action for representative drug classes.
• Give a general account of types and classes of molecular targets in the body.
• Draw the chemical structure of central drugs and signaling molecules and be able to discuss their (potential) target binding interactions, metabolic stability, etc.
• Recognize and explain types of molecular interactions between drugs and their biological targets.
• Formulate hypotheses for interactions of a given drug and its target.
• Explain the processes of absorption, distribution, metabolism and excretion of drugs, and form hypotheses for how a given drug can be optimized with regard to these factors.
• Read and understand articles in the medicinal chemistry literature, and explain and interpret the reported results.
• Analyze a dataset for a give compound series, form hypotheses for structure-activity relationships, and design optimization strategies.

Subject overview
Introduction to design and development of new drugs, and terms like leads, pharmacophores, structure-activity relationships, pharmacokinetics, drug metabolism and prodrugs. Drug targets like receptors, ion channels, enzymes and nucleic acids will be covered, and selected drug classes like antibacterial, antiviral, antiulcer and anticancer drugs, and drugs targeting specific receptor systems like the cholinergic and the adrenergic receptors will be covered in more detail.
