Prerequisites:
None

Academic preconditions:
Students from the Faculty of Science: FF503/FF504 and FF502/FF506/MM529(or KE501, FY519/FY520, MM501 and MM502/MM529) are recommended.
Students from the Faculty of Engineering: Fundamental chemistry is recommended.

Course introduction
The aim of the course is to provide the students with knowledge of and skills in elementary inorganic chemistry at such a level that this knowledge can support the learning and understanding of subsequent courses included in the studies of chemistry, pharmacy, biology, molecular biology and cell biology. The aim of the laboratory part is to provide the students with broad knowledge of the elements’ most important compounds and their reactions, as well as fundamental laboratory skills.

Expected learning outcome
At the end of the course the student is expected to be able to:

  • Classify the chemical elements according to the periodic system.
  • Apply this classification to predict important properties of chemical compounds, including stability, solubility, redox properties and reactivity.
  • Identify a given inorganic compound based on a series of analytical reactions.
  • Argue for the suggested identification.
Subject overview
  • Periodicity, tendencies in ionization energies and electron affinities
  • Oxidation states
  • Ions in solids: lattice energies and structure types
  • Ions in solution: thermodynamics and structure
  • Thermochemical cycles
  • Free elements: structure and properties
  • Hydrogen and s-block elements
  • p-block elements
  • Selected d-block elements
  • Identification of inorganic salts
Literature
  • Andrew D. Bond: Chemistry of the Elements, Laboratory Manual.

Prerequisites for participating in the exam
Attendance at 20 hours of laboratory exercises is a prerequisite for participating in evaluation a. Pass/fail, internal evaluation by teacher.

Assessment and marking:
  1. Approval of written reports. Evaluated jointly by internal marking of pass/fail (weight 2 ECTS). Deadline for submission: Latest week 50.
  2. 3 hour written examination with delivered aids. External grading with 7-point scale (weight 3 ECTS).

Reexamination in part a. will take place in week 5. Re-examination in part b. will take place in week 9.
The mode of exam at the reexamination in both a. og b. may differ from the mode of exam at the ordinary exam.

Expected working hours
The teaching method is based on three phase model.
